Andrea Pinheiro

Andrea Pinheiro (b. 1982, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) is an artist and curator working in photography, video, mixed media and installation. In her works, Pinheiro paints or applies organic materials onto the surfaces of photographs, reflecting on the relationship between representation, materials, and gesture. She then scans the altered image, making the final work digital. In doing so, Pinheiro positions the photograph as a vessel that records processes of transformation. The artist prints the photographs at a large-scale in order to emphasize the material layers. At the same time, the overlaid media obscure total visibility, and by extension, knowability of the stories embedded.

Pinheiro has exhibited widely at museums and galleries including Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Thunder Bay; Soho Photo Gallery, New York; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; Galleri Fold, Reykjavik; Art Gallery of Regina, Regina;  Republic Gallery, Vancouver; Tokushima Museum of Modern Art, Tokushima; Kyoto Museum of Art, Kyoto; Cooper Cole, Toronto; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Work Gallery, London; SNAP Gallery, Edmonton; among others. Pinheiro has completed several residencies, including at the Banff Centre for the Arts and a curatorial residency at the Helen Pitt Gallery, Vancouver. She is an Assistant Professor at Algoma University and is also the director of 180 Projects, an experimental exhibition space in Sault Sainte Marie. Pinheiro currently lives and works in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada.
